McWatt

McWatt is a pilot within the Air Force. He enjoys joking around with Yossarian until one day Yossarian gets very upset at McWatt and McWatt realizes Yossarian’s insanity. McWatt’s death is one of the most jarring within the novel. McWatt flies too low to the ground as a stunt then accidentally kill Kid Sampson, because of this mistake he kills himself….

Physical Traits: McWatt is described as short legged with broad shoulders. He has a “fine freckled nose” and occasionally wears fluffy slippers with red pajamas.

Further Analysis of McWatt: McWatt and his death are used by Heller to show the problems that war brings outside of war. Heller shows through the death of Kid Sampson that problems occur when around the large machines that are used in war.

  1. Truly a tragic moment. I remember when I read this book in high school; this part really got to me. My flight pilot back in ‘nam did the same thing after he found out that his wife had been laying with someone else for several months. Really though, great book and powerful message.
